Plan your vegetable or flower garden before you plant. This guide covers spacing, sun mapping, crop rotation, and bed layouts for US home gardens.

A garden layout accounts for sun direction, USDA zone frost dates, and crop spacing for each US region. Most US food gardens run north to south to prevent tall plants from shading shorter ones. A standard 4x8-foot raised bed holds 10–12 vegetable types using square-foot spacing. Last frost dates across the continental US range from January in Zone 10 to late May in Zone 4, directly affecting when and where you place warm-season crops.

Why planning beats guessing

Most garden failures in the first 2 years come from planting without a layout—and the most common mistake is placing tall plants where they shade short ones, or leaving no working paths, or crowding plants that need airflow.

A layout doesn’t have to be formal. A rough sketch on a notepad works. What matters is that you’ve thought through sun direction, spacing, and access before you start turning soil. Ten minutes of planning saves 3 months of wasted effort.

This guide walks through the core decisions in order: where to put beds, how to orient them, how to assign crops, how to plan paths, and how to build in crop rotation before the first seed goes in the ground.

Step 1: Map your sunlight

The most important information about any garden site is how much direct sun it receives and at what times of day.

Do this before you build any beds:

Track shadows three times on a clear day—at 9 a.m., noon, and 3 p.m. Mark on a rough sketch of your yard which areas are in sun and which are in shade at each check. Do this in early April or late March if you can—the sun angle at that time of year is close to the growing-season average in Zones 5–7.

What you learn from this:

  • Which areas receive 6+ hours of direct sun (required for vegetables, most herbs, and most fruiting crops)
  • Which areas receive 4–6 hours (workable for leafy greens and some herbs)
  • Which areas receive under 4 hours (not productive for most food gardening)

Trees are the biggest variable. A mature oak or maple can cast a shadow that moves 10–15 feet between May and August as the sun angle changes. Trees on the south side of a bed are the worst case—they block midday sun directly. Trees on the north side of a bed cast little shadow during growing season.

Step 2: Decide on bed size and number

The most common raised bed in US gardens is 4 feet wide by 8 feet long. This size became standard for a practical reason: you can reach the center from either side without stepping inside.

Bed length is flexible—8 feet, 12 feet, or 16 feet are all common. The constraint is your path access and your ability to reach plants in the center section during harvest.

How many beds do you need?

A 4x8 bed (32 square feet) provides a meaningful supplemental harvest for a household of 2–3 people if planted well. For a more serious food garden, 3–5 beds of this size cover staples like tomatoes, peppers, beans, and salad greens through summer.

Start small and expand. One bed in year one teaches you your site’s specific sun, drainage, and soil conditions. Mistakes in one bed cost less than mistakes in five.

Step 3: Orient beds correctly

In the continental US, most garden beds should run north to south. This orientation means:

  • Tall crops (corn, tomatoes, sunflowers) grow at the north end of each bed
  • Medium crops go in the middle
  • Short crops (lettuce, herbs, beets) go at the south end

With this setup, tall plants face north—their shadow falls on ground north of the bed, not across shorter crops in the same or adjacent beds.

East-west orientation works in some cases—if you have a long narrow lot that runs east-west, or if you want rows running perpendicular to a fence. But east-west rows create consistent shade problems: the tall plants on the west end of the row shade the shorter ones on the east end during afternoon hours.

Slope matters. If your yard slopes, orient beds perpendicular to the slope (running across the hill, not down it). This prevents runoff from washing down the length of each bed during heavy rain. Water moves laterally across the bed instead of channeling through it.

Step 4: Assign crops by needs and height

Once you know which beds get full sun and how they’ll be oriented, assign crops systematically.

Assign your highest-sun beds to tomatoes, peppers, and squash first. These crops need the full allocation and repay it with the most productive harvest.

By height

For each bed, plan north-to-south as tall → medium → short:

Sample 4x8 bed (north to south):

  • North 2 feet: 2 indeterminate tomatoes on stakes
  • Middle 3 feet: 3 pepper plants (or 4 basil, or compact beans)
  • South 3 feet: 4 lettuce heads or spinach, then herbs at the very south edge

This stacking approach gives every plant access to sun without one blocking another.

Step 5: Build in crop rotation

Crop rotation is easiest to plan from day one and nearly impossible to retrofit later. The principle: don’t plant the same plant family in the same bed two years in a row.

Why it matters: soil-borne diseases (Fusarium, Verticillium, early blight) and some pests overwinter in soil and plant debris. If tomatoes go in the same spot for 5 years, disease pressure builds to the point where the crop fails regardless of other care.

The minimum rotation for a home vegetable garden is 3 years between the same family in the same location. 4 years is better for heavy soils in humid climates.

Four-zone rotation system:

Divide your garden into 4 zones (beds or groups of beds) and rotate in this cycle:

Each family moves to the next zone annually. After 4 years, every family has been through every zone once. This is the proven model used by commercial organic growers and cooperative extension-recommended for US home gardens.

Mark your rotation plan in a notebook and update it each year. Written records are more reliable than memory—by year 3, it’s easy to forget what was where in year 1.

Step 6: Plan paths and access

Paths are one of the most overlooked elements of garden layout.

Path width requirements:

  • Minimum path between beds: 18 inches (allows sideways movement but no kneeling)
  • Comfortable path: 24 inches (allows kneeling beside the bed to weed or harvest)
  • Wheelbarrow path: 30–36 inches (needed at least one primary path through the garden)

Mark paths on your layout before finalizing bed placement. It’s easy to draw beds close together on paper and discover in practice that you can’t comfortably work between them.

Path materials:

  • Straw mulch: cheap, breaks down, needs annual replenishment; fine for most home gardens
  • Wood chips: better weed suppression, lasts 2–3 years; best choice for permanent paths
  • Compacted gravel: permanent, no maintenance; good for primary wheelchair-accessible paths

Step 7: Account for water access

Every bed needs to be within 50 feet of a water source, or you need to plan for irrigation before building.

Questions to answer before finalizing the layout:

  1. Where is the nearest outdoor faucet?
  2. Will a hose reach the farthest bed comfortably?
  3. Are you planning drip irrigation now or later?

Water access also affects bed placement. If your only faucet is at the back of the house, place the most water-intensive crops (cucumbers, tomatoes, squash) closest to that faucet. Less thirsty crops (herbs, beets, beans) can go farther away.

3-bed system with rotation

Three 4x8 beds laid side by side, 24-inch path between each:

  • Bed 1 (Year 1): Tomatoes, peppers, basil
  • Bed 2 (Year 1): Beans, peas, summer squash
  • Bed 3 (Year 1): Lettuce, kale, carrots, beets

Year 2: Each crop family rotates to the next bed (Bed 1 crops → Bed 2, Bed 2 crops → Bed 3, Bed 3 crops → Bed 1). After 3 years, the full rotation completes and the cycle restarts.

Soil testing before layout is final

Before the first seed goes in, test your soil. Soil pH affects what you can grow and how productive it will be. Most vegetables prefer pH 6.0–7.0. A simple soil test kit costs $10–15 at garden centers and tells you pH and sometimes basic nutrient levels.

If your soil pH is below 6.0, lime applications will bring it up over 1–2 seasons. If it’s above 7.5, sulfur applications lower it. Either correction takes time—knowing your starting pH before planting helps you choose crops that tolerate your current conditions while you adjust.

Planning tools and resources

Graph paper and a pencil remain the most effective low-cost planning tools. Draw your lot to scale, mark existing trees and structures, sketch beds, and annotate with crop assignments. Laminate the plan to use it outside.
