Why raised beds outperform in-ground planting

Good starter crops for a 4x4: one tomato plant (supported by a cage), a row of lettuce around the perimeter, basil in the front corners, and marigolds at the two far corners to deter pests.

The 4x12 raised bed (high-yield option)

A 4x12 extends the 4x8 plan with an extra 4 feet. This size fits neatly into most backyard spaces and allows a three-section layout: one section each for warm-season crops (tomatoes, peppers), cool-season crops (greens, brassicas), and herbs.

L-shaped and U-shaped configurations

Materials comparison

Wood

Untreated cedar is the premium choice. Cedar’s natural oils resist rot without chemical treatment. Expect 10–15 years of service in most US climates. It costs 2–3x more than pine but lasts twice as long.

Untreated pine is the budget option. In dry western climates, pine beds last 5–8 years. In humid climates (Southeast, Pacific Northwest), 4–6 years is more realistic. Replace boards as they rot — the frame rarely needs full replacement at once.

Pressure-treated wood (ACQ — alkaline copper quaternary) raises concerns for edibles. Modern ACQ lumber does not use arsenic, but copper compounds can leach into soil. Use a heavy plastic liner if you use pressure-treated wood for food gardens, or stick to cedar and pine.

Douglas fir is a middle option — more rot-resistant than pine, less than cedar, and available at most US lumber yards.

Galvanized steel

Galvanized corrugated steel beds have become popular in the US since 2019. A galvanized steel raised bed:

  • Lasts 25–30+ years without rotting
  • Heats up faster in spring (good in cooler zones)
  • Overheats in hot climates in summer (problematic in Zones 9–11 unless shaded)
  • Costs more upfront ($150–300 for a 4x8 kit) but cheaper per year of use

Composite lumber

Filling a raised bed: the mix matters

The single most common raised bed mistake is filling with native soil, bagged potting mix, or pure compost alone. Each of these options creates problems in year 1 or year 2.

  • Native soil: Often compacts in a raised bed environment where it gets watered regularly. Brings in weed seeds and may drain poorly.
  • Pure potting mix: Too light — compresses heavily after a few waterings, shrinks significantly, and doesn’t hold moisture in summer.
  • Pure compost: Too rich and dense; can cause nitrogen burn on seedlings; drains poorly when wet.

The 60/30/10 mix

I tested this formula against bagged potting mix on parallel 4x8 beds in my Nashville garden starting in 2021:

  • 60% premium topsoil (screened, from a local landscape supplier)
  • 30% compost (aged, either homemade or bulk purchased)
  • 10% perlite or coarse sand (improves drainage; prevents compaction)

In year one, the 60/30/10 beds outproduced the potting mix beds on tomatoes (27% higher yield by weight) and produced significantly straighter beets and radishes. In year three, the potting mix beds had settled 3 inches and showed compaction; the 60/30/10 beds had settled 1 inch and remained loose.

The lasagna method for new beds

  • Extend growing by 3–5°F minimum temperature

Cold frames:

What to add each year

A raised bed is not a “build it and forget it” system. Each season, plants remove nutrients and organic matter from the soil. To maintain productivity:
