Straw mulch: the best all-around choice

Straw is the top recommendation for most US vegetable gardens. It is light, easy to apply, inexpensive, doesn’t compact, allows water and air to pass through freely, and breaks down over one growing season to add organic matter.

Straw is not hay. Hay contains seeds — it is cut while the grain is still green. Straw is the stem left after grain harvest, with seeds already removed. Buying straw from a farm supply store guarantees a low-seed product; hay from a feed store can introduce thousands of weed seeds into your garden.

Where to get straw:

  • Farm supply stores (Tractor Supply, Rural King, local feed stores): $6–10 per bale
  • Garden centers: $10–15 per bale (same product, higher markup)
  • Local farms: often available at lower cost, sometimes free after harvest season

How to apply straw:

  1. Water the garden thoroughly before mulching
  2. Pull a flake of straw from the bale and fluff it to break up the compressed layers

Black plastic mulch: the choice for heat-loving crops

Black plastic mulch warms soil 5–8°F above ambient temperature and suppresses weeds completely. In USDA Zones 5–7, it is the recommended mulch for tomatoes, peppers, eggplant, melons, and cucumbers — crops that need warm soil for maximum production.

Black plastic absorbs heat during the day and releases it slowly at night, maintaining warmer root-zone temperatures than organic mulches. This is significant in zone 5–6 gardens where spring soil stays below 60°F into late May — the temperature threshold below which pepper and eggplant root development essentially stops.

How to install black plastic mulch:

  1. Prepare the bed and amend the soil before installation — you cannot easily work the soil under plastic once it’s laid

Shredded leaves: the fall mulch resource

The 2-inch gap from plant stems is non-negotiable. Any organic mulch piled against a plant stem traps moisture and creates ideal conditions for crown rot, a fungal disease that kills plants by destroying the stem at the soil line. When to apply mulch in US vegetable gardens
