The best windows for snake plants

East-facing window (ideal)

West-facing window (workable with care)

The classic mistake is placing a new snake plant purchased from a dim nursery or big-box store directly in a sunny south or west window without acclimatizing it. Give the plant 2–4 weeks of medium indirect light first, then move it gradually to a brighter position.

Effect of low light on variegated snake plants

Variegated snake plant varieties — ‘Laurentii’ with its yellow edges, ‘Moonshine’ with its silver-green leaves, ‘Black Gold’ with its dark green and gold margins — reduce pigment contrast in low light over months to years.

This happens because the plant responds to low light by increasing chlorophyll concentration in leaf cells to maximize photosynthesis efficiency. More chlorophyll = more green, which masks the lighter variegation. The effect is reversible. Move the plant to brighter indirect light and new leaves will emerge with stronger variegation contrast.

In practice, this means a ‘Laurentii’ in a north window may gradually look more uniformly green and less attractively striped than when you bought it. Moving it to an east window usually restores the distinctive yellow-edged look within 2–4 new leaf cycles.

Snake plants under artificial light
