What is a snake plant?

How often to water a snake plant

  5. Water once and then treat like an established snake plant

Pups from variegated varieties like ‘Laurentii’ produce variegated offspring. This is the only propagation method that preserves variegation.

Method 2: Leaf cuttings in water

  1. Cut a healthy leaf into 3–4-inch sections
  2. Note the direction (bottom edge of the section toward the water)
  3. Place sections in a jar of water with the bottom edge submerged
  4. Roots appear in 4–8 weeks. Pot in well-draining mix once roots reach 1 inch.

Note: Leaf cuttings from ‘Laurentii’ and other yellow-edged varieties produce plain green offspring, not variegated plants. The yellow edges are not in the leaf tissue — they come from the rhizome. Only pup division preserves variegation.

Method 3: Leaf cuttings in soil

Same as water propagation but cut sections are planted directly into slightly moist, very well-draining mix. Less visual than water propagation but produces more robust roots.

Are snake plants toxic to cats and dogs?
