Boxwood blight: the primary disease threat

Boxwood blight (Calonectria pseudonaviculata) is the most serious disease threat to Green Mountain boxwood across the eastern US. It causes rapid defoliation and can kill a plant within weeks of infection.

Boxwood blight arrived in the US from Europe around 2011 and has spread through most states east of the Mississippi. It is spread by infected plant material (a primary infection route is buying infected plants from a nursery), contaminated tools, and splashing water.

Boxwood leafminer (Monarthropalpus flavus) is the most widespread insect pest of boxwood in the US. The small fly lays eggs in new leaves in spring; larvae mine inside the leaf tissue through winter, causing yellow blistered patches on foliage in late summer.

Treatment: Imidacloprid soil drench (applied as the plant leafs out in spring) provides season-long protection. For organic management, spray neem oil or insecticidal soap on new foliage during the egg-laying period in late May.

Volutella blight (Pseudonectria buxi) causes similar symptoms to boxwood blight but progresses more slowly. Look for salmon-colored spore masses on infected stems after rain. Prune out affected stems and sterilize tools. Less severe than boxwood blight in most US gardens.

Winter bronzing in Zones 4–5 is normal for Green Mountain boxwood — the green-gray foliage turns bronze-yellow during hard winters. This is not disease or damage. Color returns to green by April. If bronzing persists into June, that indicates winterburn damage; prune affected branches.

Phytophthora root rot in poorly drained soil. Symptoms: sudden wilting, brown roots, stem dieback at the crown. No recovery once severe. Prevention only: excellent soil drainage.
