Planting cherry tomatoes

Plant transplants deep — bury the stem up to the lowest true leaves. Tomatoes form roots along any buried stem, producing a stronger, more water-stable root system.

Step-by-step planting:

  1. Dig a hole deeper than the transplant’s root ball
  2. If the seedling is tall and leggy, dig a trench and lay the plant on its side — the tip curves upward and the buried stem roots throughout its length
  3. Set the plant so only the top 2–3 sets of leaves are above soil
  4. Fill in and firm the soil around the stem
  5. Water deeply at planting
  6. Install support immediately after planting

How to support cherry tomato plants

Watering cherry tomatoes

Water cherry tomatoes deeply 2–3 times per week during summer. The goal is consistently moist — not wet — soil at a 6-inch depth. Inconsistent watering is the primary cause of blossom drop and fruit cracking.

Cherry tomatoes crack when the plant takes up water faster than the fruit skin can expand. This happens most often after a dry period followed by rain or heavy irrigation. Consistent, moderate watering prevents the pressure spike inside the fruit that causes skin to split.

In-ground plants: Water 1–1.5 inches per week total, split across 2–3 waterings. Use drip irrigation or soaker hoses to deliver water at the root zone without wetting foliage — wet foliage promotes fungal disease.

Container plants: Water daily (sometimes twice daily) in summer heat. Small containers dry out much faster than garden beds. A 5-gallon pot in full sun may need water every 24 hours when temperatures exceed 85°F.

Fertilizing cherry tomatoes

Start fertilizing when the plant sets its first flower clusters. Before flowering, excess nitrogen drives leafy growth at the expense of fruit. Once flowers appear, switch to a fertilizer with lower nitrogen and higher phosphorus and potassium.

Pruning cherry tomatoes

Pruning cherry tomatoes is optional but increases airflow, reduces disease, and (for indeterminate varieties) focuses plant energy on fewer, larger fruit clusters.

Suckers are the shoots that emerge from the junction of the main stem and a leaf branch. Removing suckers is called “suckering.” For indeterminate cherry tomatoes:

  • Remove suckers below the first flower cluster to keep the plant stem single (or double, with one main sucker left in place)
  • Removing all suckers aggressively reduces overall yield because suckers also produce fruit

When and how to harvest cherry tomatoes

Cherry tomatoes are ready to harvest when they reach full color for the variety and release from the vine easily with a gentle pull. Do not wait for tomatoes to become soft — they continue ripening off the vine and overripe tomatoes on the plant reduce new fruit set.
