Tomato Cages: Types and How to Use Them

Tomato cages keep plants upright and fruit off the ground. Learn which cage type works for determinate vs indeterminate tomatoes and how to install them.

Tomato support is essential across all US growing zones — unsupported tomato plants topple under fruit weight in any climate. The most common mistake in US home gardens is using undersized wire cages for large indeterminate varieties. Standard retail cages are 4 feet tall; most indeterminate tomatoes grow 5–8 feet and require either a 5–6-foot cage or a wooden stake of at least 8 feet.

Why tomato plants need support

Tomatoes are not naturally self-supporting. Wild tomato species sprawl along the ground. In garden cultivation, where we select for large, heavy fruit clusters, plants need structural support to stay upright and keep fruit from contact with soil that causes rot and disease.

An unsupported tomato plant grows outward in every direction, eventually collapsing under its own weight. Fruit that touches soil invites fungal rot, slug damage, and insect entry. Air circulation through a supported, trained plant is significantly better than through a collapsed one — and poor air circulation is the main driver of early blight, late blight, and Septoria leaf spot.

Beyond disease: harvesting from a supported plant is faster and easier. Fruit on a collapsed plant is hidden under leaves and stems, is harder to see, and is more likely to be missed until it overripens.

Types of tomato cages

Standard wire cages

The folding wire cages sold at hardware stores and garden centers for $3–6 are designed for compact or determinate tomatoes. They stand 3–4 feet tall with 3 rings and stake into the soil with 3–4 wire legs.

What they work for: Determinate varieties (Roma, Celebrity, Bush Early Girl, Better Bush) that grow to a fixed compact height of 2–4 feet and do not need continual tying as they grow.

What they don’t work for: Any indeterminate variety. Standard cages collapse or tip under an indeterminate tomato that has grown past their height, especially after fruit load increases. This is one of the most common and frustrating failures in home vegetable gardens.

Heavy-duty steel cages

Heavy-gauge tomato cages in 5–6 foot heights are available at garden centers, farm stores, and online. Brands like Gardener’s Supply, Titan, and various farm suppliers make them in 12–14 gauge galvanized wire.

Cost: $12–25 per cage new; last indefinitely with proper storage.

Best for: All indeterminate tomatoes up to 6 feet tall. Most gardeners growing hybrid varieties like Better Boy, Sun Gold, or Cherokee Purple will find heavy-duty 5-foot cages adequate.

Limitation: Even 5-foot cages can be outgrown by vigorous indeterminate heirloom varieties in Zones 7–9 with long growing seasons.

DIY concrete reinforcing wire cages

The strongest, most cost-effective cage option is a DIY cylinder made from concrete reinforcing wire (remesh, rebar wire). This material is available at home improvement stores in 5-foot-wide rolls, typically sold by the linear foot.

DIY cage instructions:

  1. Purchase concrete reinforcing wire (also called welded wire fencing or remesh) — 5 feet wide with 6x6 inch grid openings
  2. Cut a 5-foot section from the roll
  3. Roll it into a cylinder approximately 18 inches in diameter
  4. Secure the cylinder by bending the cut wire ends around the opposite edge
  5. Cut the bottom ring of wire to expose vertical legs for staking into soil

Cost per cage: $2–3 for the wire, using standard tools you already own.

Advantages: 6-inch grid openings allow easy harvesting from inside the cage; height of 5 feet accommodates all but the tallest varieties; galvanized wire lasts 15–20+ years; cages fold flat for storage.

Wooden stakes

Single wooden or metal stakes allow more aggressive training of indeterminate tomatoes. Plants are tied to the stake with soft ties as they grow, and suckers are removed to maintain a single or double main stem.

Stake specifications:

  • Height: 6–8 feet above ground (a 7-foot stake pounded 12 inches into the ground sits at 6 feet)
  • Material: 1x2-inch wood, ½-inch rebar, or fiberglass
  • Purchase: 8-foot lumber stakes from a building supply store are the most affordable option

Single-stake training works best for gardeners who want maximum fruit size and are willing to prune weekly. Plants trained to a single stem require more attention but produce fewer, larger tomatoes in a smaller footprint.

Florida weave (string trellising)

The Florida weave is the commercial standard for large-scale tomato plantings and works equally well in home row gardens with 4 or more plants.

Setup:

  1. Pound 6-foot stakes between every two plants in the row (one stake between plants 1 and 2, one between 2 and 3, and a stake at each end)
  2. As plants grow to 8–10 inches, weave garden twine horizontally along the row, alternating which side of each stake the twine passes on
  3. Repeat with another row of twine every 8–10 inches of plant growth

Advantages: Faster to install than individual cages for row plantings; uses minimal hardware; allows easy access to plants for pruning and harvesting.

Disadvantages: Requires ongoing attention to add new twine levels as plants grow; less suitable for widely spaced or scattered plantings.

When to install tomato support

Install cages or stakes at transplanting time, before the plant needs them. Waiting until a plant falls over means late installation, which involves driving stakes through the existing root zone.

Tomato roots spread 12–24 inches from the stem within the first 3–4 weeks of transplanting. A stake driven 6–8 inches from the stem at week 6 of growth will damage these roots, reducing water and nutrient uptake right when the plant is setting its first fruit.

The “install early” rule applies even when the transplant looks tiny in the cage — the cage will be needed within 4–6 weeks and the inconvenience of a large cage around a small plant is minimal.

How to use tomato cages

For wire cages: Press all leg wires equally into the soil, keeping the cage vertical. The cage should be stable enough to withstand wind without additional anchoring. In windy sites, drive a stake alongside the cage and tie the cage to it.

As branches grow, tuck them inside the cage rings rather than letting them hang outside. This maintains the plant’s relationship with the cage structure.

Tying tips:

  • Use soft ties, strips of fabric, or specialized tomato clips — not wire or tight plastic that cuts into stems
  • Tie loosely enough to allow stem growth — a tie that’s right today will be tight in 2 weeks
  • Secure the main stem, not just lateral branches

Cages for other vegetables

Tomato cages work for several other vegetables with heavy fruit loads:

Storing and maintaining tomato cages

At the end of the growing season, clean cages with a brush to remove plant material and soil that harbors disease spores. Allow to dry completely before storing.

Heavy-duty wire cages can be nested together for compact storage. Standard folding cages fold flat. DIY remesh cylinders can be unrolled flat for winter storage or stacked nested inside each other.

Inspect cages for rust spots each spring. Light surface rust on galvanized wire is cosmetic and does not weaken the structure. Deep corrosion or broken welds on welded wire cages indicate replacement is needed.
