How a beer slug trap works

Beer attracts slugs because yeast fermentation produces CO2 and volatile organic compounds that mimic rotting organic matter — exactly what slugs feed on at night. They enter the container and drown.

Slugs are nocturnal feeders. They emerge after dark, follow moisture and scent gradients across the soil surface, and locate food by chemical smell. The fermentation odor from beer mimics decaying plant matter and is detectable to slugs from several feet away.

Once a slug enters a properly set trap — a container with vertical sides, sunk to ground level, filled 1 inch deep — it cannot escape. Slugs can climb vertical surfaces, but not when partially submerged. The trap works without any poison, making it safe for pets, wildlife, children, and certified organic gardens.

What you need

  • Container: any shallow container with vertical sides, 2–3 inches deep. Tuna cans, yogurt containers, cut-off plastic bottles, or purpose-made slug traps all work. Diameter should be at least 3 inches.
  • Beer: any cheap lager. A 12-ounce can fills 6–8 standard tuna-can traps to the correct 1-inch depth.
  • Trowel: to dig a hole so the container rim sits flush with the soil surface.

No lid needed. No bait needed other than the beer.

Step-by-step setup

1. Choose placement

Place traps near plants that are showing slug damage or are most vulnerable:

  • Seedlings in the first 2–3 weeks
  • Hostas
  • Leafy greens and lettuce
  • Strawberries
  • Dahlia and marigold transplants

Put traps at the perimeter of beds, not just the center. Slugs approach from garden edges and paths. A trap at the edge catches slugs before they reach plants.

2. Dig to rim depth

Use a trowel to dig a hole the exact width and depth of your container. Press the container in so the rim sits flush with the soil surface — no higher, no lower. A rim even 1/2 inch above ground level dramatically reduces catch rates because slugs won’t crawl up over the edge.

3. Fill to 1 inch

Pour beer to about 1 inch depth. This depth kills slugs but allows larger ground beetles (which are slug predators) a chance to escape if they fall in. Do not fill to the brim.

4. Set at dusk

Set traps as the sun goes down. Slugs become active within 1–2 hours after dark. Traps set in the morning and left through the day dry out and stop working.

5. Check and refresh every 1–2 days

Check traps each morning. Count the catch if you want to track population pressure, then dump the contents. Dispose of the slugs by adding to a compost pile (dead slugs are fine for compost) or dropping in a bucket of soapy water.

Rinse the container and refill with fresh beer each time. Old beer that has been sitting for 2+ days loses its yeast volatiles and stops attracting.

Yeast-water recipe: Dissolve 1 teaspoon active dry yeast and 1 tablespoon sugar in 1 cup warm water (not hot — hot water kills yeast). Let stand 20–30 minutes until it starts bubbling. Pour immediately. It ferments for about 12–24 hours before fading.

Why container depth and rim height matter

Two setup mistakes reduce trap effectiveness to near zero:

Rim too high: If the container rim is even 1/2 inch above soil level, slug catch rates drop by 60–80% in controlled studies. Slugs move along the soil surface and approach the trap at ground level. They will not climb over a raised rim to fall into beer.

Too much liquid: Filling the container more than 1 inch deep creates an accidental trap for beneficial ground beetles (Carabidae). Set the rim flush and fill only 1 inch.
