What is a dogwood tree?

Dogwood trees in the Cornus genus are among the most beloved ornamental trees in the eastern US. They provide four-season interest: spring flowers before leaf-out, summer foliage, vivid fall color, and persistent red berries that feed birds through winter. Flowering dogwood (Cornus florida) is the most widely planted native flowering tree in the US east of the Mississippi.

The “flowers” of a dogwood are technically not flowers at all. The showy white or pink structures are bracts — modified leaves that surround the actual small cluster of true flowers at the center. The bracts are 1.5–2 inches across, broadly oval, and often notched at the tip. Their purpose is to attract pollinators to the inconspicuous central flowers.

Three species are widely grown in US gardens:

  • Cornus florida (flowering dogwood): native to the eastern US; blooms late March–April; most wildlife value
  • Cornus kousa (kousa dogwood): native to East Asia; blooms May–June; more disease-resistant; edible fruit
  • Cornus nuttallii (Pacific dogwood): native to the Pacific Coast; Zones 7–9 in the West only

A fourth group — hybrid C. florida × C. kousa varieties — combine the early bloom of C. florida with the anthracnose resistance of C. kousa. These hybrids are increasingly recommended in anthracnose-pressure areas.

Anthracnose-resistant C. florida varieties: ‘Appalachian Spring’, ‘Jean’s Appalachian Snow’, and ‘Karen’s Appalachian Blush’ are C. florida selections with documented resistance. These were developed from material that survived in anthracnose-affected areas of the Appalachians.

Hybrid varieties offer the best combination of resistance and ornamental performance. The Rutgers hybrids (‘Aurora’, ‘Constellation’, ‘Celestial’, ‘Ruth Ellen’) were developed specifically for disease resistance and have performed well in US trial gardens since the 1980s.

Where to plant a dogwood tree

Plant dogwoods in partial shade in Zones 7–9 and in full sun to partial shade in Zones 5–6. Dogwoods are native understory trees — they evolved growing beneath oaks, maples, and hickories in open woodland settings, receiving 4–6 hours of direct sun and shade during the hottest afternoon hours.

Full sun in Zones 7–9 stresses dogwoods and opens them to disease. The combination of heat, direct afternoon sun, and drought stress in summer significantly increases anthracnose susceptibility and general decline.

Ideal site characteristics:

  • Morning sun with afternoon shade in Zones 7–9
  • Full sun to partial shade (4–6 hours) in Zones 5–6
  • Well-drained, moderately acidic soil (pH 5.5–6.5)
  • Never in low areas where water collects after rain
  • Away from paved surfaces that reflect heat and block root space
  • At least 15 feet from buildings and other large trees

Dogwoods make exceptional specimen trees in lawns when planted with proper mulch rings to protect their shallow root systems. They also work well at woodland edges, in naturalistic plantings, or as understory trees beneath established oaks.

What soil does dogwood need?

Dogwood trees need well-drained, moderately acidic soil (pH 5.5–6.5) with good organic matter content. Heavy clay soil that stays wet after rain causes root rot. Alkaline soil prevents iron and manganese uptake, causing interveinal chlorosis and slow decline.

Most soils in the eastern US, where native dogwoods evolved, are naturally slightly acidic from organic matter decomposition. If your soil tests above pH 6.5, acidify with elemental sulfur applied per label rates before planting.

In clay-heavy soil, plant on a slight slope or in a raised planting area where water drains away from the root zone. Dogwoods can survive in moderate clay if drainage is adequate — standing water for more than 24 hours after rain is the threshold that causes root stress.

Good soil preparation before planting:

  1. Test soil pH; adjust if above 6.5
  2. Work 3–4 inches of compost into the top 8–10 inches of soil over a 6-foot diameter planting area
  3. Avoid creating a “bowl” with amended soil surrounded by clay — this creates a bathtub effect that traps water around roots

How to plant a dogwood tree

Plant dogwoods in spring or fall. Fall planting (September–November) is preferred in most US zones because it gives the root system time to establish before the demanding summer heat and drought period.

Planting steps:

  1. Dig a planting hole twice as wide as the root ball but no deeper than the root ball
  2. Set the tree with the root flare (where trunk meets roots) at or slightly above ground level — planting too deep is one of the top causes of dogwood decline
  3. Backfill with native soil; no amendment needed in the planting hole itself
  4. Create a wide mulch ring — 4 feet in diameter, 3–4 inches deep — around the base, keeping mulch 4 inches away from the trunk
  5. Water thoroughly at planting
  6. Install tree stake only if site is windy; stake for maximum one year

The mulch ring is critical. Dogwood roots are very shallow and extend 2–3 times the width of the canopy. Lawn mowers and string trimmers that repeatedly injure the base of the trunk create entry points for dogwood borer insects (Synanthedon scitula), which cause significant damage. A wide, permanent mulch ring prevents this.

Watering dogwood trees: the most important care detail

The single most important care practice for dogwoods is consistent moisture in the first 3 years. Drought stress in years 1–3 dramatically increases susceptibility to dogwood anthracnose, borers, and other secondary problems that cause tree death.

New dogwoods need approximately 1 inch of water per week during the growing season. In dry summers, this requires supplemental irrigation. A soaker hose placed at the drip line (the outer edge of the canopy) delivers water where it is most needed — near the active root tips.

After 3–4 years of establishment, dogwoods become moderately drought-tolerant and rely primarily on rainfall. They may still benefit from supplemental irrigation during extended droughts of 3+ weeks.

Signs of drought stress in dogwood:

  • Leaf scorch (brown leaf edges) in summer
  • Early leaf drop (dropping leaves in late summer before fall color)
  • Wilting in late afternoon that recovers overnight
  • Poor fall color

Addressing drought stress promptly reduces the risk of secondary problems. A stressed dogwood is significantly more susceptible to dogwood anthracnose, borers, and powdery mildew than a well-watered one.

Dogwood anthracnose: what US gardeners need to know

Dogwood anthracnose (Discula destructiva) is a fungal disease that has killed native dogwoods across large areas of the Appalachians and northeastern US since the 1970s. It begins as water-soaked leaf spots, progresses to tan blotches with purple borders, and eventually kills branches and the main stem.

The disease spreads most rapidly in cool, wet springs — conditions that occur every few years in the eastern US. High humidity, shade, and poor air circulation accelerate spread.

High-risk areas: Mountains of Virginia, North Carolina, Tennessee, Georgia, and the northeastern US where dogwoods grow in natural stands. Low-lying, poorly drained sites in any zone.

Lower-risk areas: Dry, hot climate zones (Zones 7–9 in the South and Southwest) where spring conditions are less favorable for the fungus; open, sunny, well-ventilated garden sites.

Management options:

  • Plant resistant varieties (‘Appalachian Spring’, Rutgers hybrids)
  • Water at the base, not overhead — wet foliage accelerates fungal spread
  • Remove and destroy infected branches promptly
  • Apply fungicide sprays (chlorothalonil or copper-based) at bud break through leaf-out if disease pressure is known to be high in your area

Dogwoods work best as specimens or at woodland edges. Their shallow root system can compete with nearby plants for moisture, so choose companions that tolerate some root competition.
