What is autumn fern?
Autumn fern (Dryopteris erythrosora) is a semi-evergreen shade fern native to eastern Asia that grows 18–24 inches tall and wide in USDA Zones 5–9. Its signature feature is the copper-red color of new fronds in spring — a striking warm tone that turns glossy dark green as fronds mature. The name refers to this copper coloring, not the fall season.
Despite its origins in Japan, China, and Korea, autumn fern has naturalized well in US shade gardens. How to plant autumn fern
Plant autumn fern in spring after frost danger has passed, or in fall 6–8 weeks before first frost. Fall planting works well in Zones 6–9 because mild temperatures and natural rainfall reduce establishment stress.
Choosing the right site
The two non-negotiable requirements are shade and moist soil. Afternoon sun in Zones 6–9 will scorch fronds even on established plants. Sites that receive morning sun (2–4 hours) and afternoon shade are ideal. North-facing beds and the shaded side of structures are reliable locations.
Standing water is problematic. While autumn fern needs consistently moist soil, roots sitting in waterlogged soil will rot. A site that drains within 2–3 hours of rainfall works well. If your shade area tends to pool water, raise the bed by 4–6 inches with amended soil.
Soil preparation
Autumn fern prefers slightly acidic soil with a pH of 5.5–6.5 and high organic matter content. Before planting, work 2–3 inches of compost into the top 8–10 inches of soil. This improves moisture retention, drainage, and feeds soil microbes that support root health.

Autumn fern needs partial to full shade. The ideal light exposure is dappled shade or 2–4 hours of morning sun followed by shade for the rest of the day.
Direct afternoon sun causes frond tip scorch in most US climates. The fronds turn brown at the edges and lose their glossy appearance. Once a frond is scorched, it does not recover — remove damaged fronds and provide shade for the plant going forward.
In deep shade (under dense tree canopies or in north-facing corners), autumn fern still grows but produces less copper color on new fronds and spreads more slowly. A middle ground of dappled or open shade produces the best copper color intensity and the fastest establishment.
In Zones 8–9, afternoon shade is mandatory. In Zones 5–6, slightly more sun exposure is tolerable in cooler summer climates.
Watering autumn fern
Water autumn fern consistently in its first season to establish a deep root system. After establishment, reduce watering significantly — in Zones 5–7, established plants typically need water only during droughts longer than 2–3 weeks.
During year one, water when the top inch of soil dries out. This typically means watering once or twice weekly during summer in most US climates. The goal is to keep the soil moist but not saturated.
After year one, established roots reach deeper moisture and the plant can sustain itself through normal rainfall patterns in Zones 5–7. In Zones 8–9, summer watering is still necessary during dry periods — once a week during hot, dry stretches.
Signs of drought stress: frond tips turning brown, older fronds yellowing, and overall wilting during the day. These are correctable if you increase watering before the plant shuts down.

How to care for autumn fern through the seasons
Spring (March–May)
New copper fronds emerge in early spring. This is the most visually striking period. In Zones 5–6, this starts in late April. In Zones 7–9, new growth appears in March.
Remove any winter-damaged fronds from the previous year before new growth emerges. Cut them at the base with sharp scissors. This cleanup improves air circulation and allows the copper fronds to be seen clearly.
No fertilizer is needed in established plants. In newly planted first-year ferns, a light application of balanced slow-release fertilizer (10-10-10) in early spring gives plants a boost.
Watch for slugs during this period. New fronds are vulnerable as they unfurl. Set iron phosphate slug bait around plants proactively.
Summer (June–August)
By June, copper fronds have matured to glossy dark green. The plant fills in and provides excellent texture in shade beds.
Water consistently in Zone 8–9. In Zones 5–7, water only during hot dry spells (no rain for 2+ weeks). The plant is at its largest and most architectural during summer.
No pruning needed during summer unless individual fronds are damaged by slugs or mechanical damage. Remove damaged fronds at the base.
Fall (September–November)
In Zones 7–9, fronds continue holding through fall into winter. The plant maintains its green color. No action needed.
In Zones 5–6, fronds start dying back after hard freezes. Leave them in place through early winter — they protect the crown. Remove them in late February or early March before new fronds emerge.
Winter (December–February)
In Zones 7–9, autumn fern holds fronds through most winters. A hard freeze below 10°F may cause frond damage. Those damaged fronds can be removed in early spring.
In Zones 5–6, the plant is dormant. The crown is protected underground. No care needed until spring.

Slug control
Slugs are the biggest threat to autumn fern, especially in spring when new fronds are unfurling. A single slug can shred a new frond overnight.
Iron phosphate slug bait (sold as Sluggo, Escar-Go, and similar products) is effective, safe for pets and wildlife, and breaks down into iron and phosphate in the soil. Apply around the base of ferns in early spring, at the first sign of new growth. Reapply after rain.
Beer traps also work: bury a shallow container level with the soil, fill with cheap beer, and slugs are attracted, fall in, and drown. Replace weekly.

Is autumn fern deer resistant?
Autumn fern has moderate deer resistance. Deer generally avoid ferns due to their bitter compounds, but hungry deer will eat nearly anything in winter. In areas with very high deer pressure, no plant is fully safe.
