How deep should you plant tomatoes?

Plant tomato transplants deep — bury the stem up to the lowest healthy leaves, removing any leaves that would go underground. For a standard 6-inch transplant, this means burying 4–5 inches of stem, leaving only the top 2–4 inches of growth above soil.

This is the single most impactful planting decision you can make for tomatoes. Unlike most vegetables, tomato stems sprout roots wherever they contact soil. A buried 4-inch stem segment can produce a root mass equivalent to 3–4 weeks of in-ground growth — giving deep-planted tomatoes a substantial head start over shallowly planted ones.

Shallow-planted tomatoes — set in a hole just deep enough to hold the root ball — miss this advantage entirely. They depend entirely on the transplant’s existing roots and take longer to establish, making them more vulnerable to drought and temperature swings in the critical first four weeks.

Why tomatoes are different from other vegetables

Most vegetables should be planted at the same depth they grew in their containers. Tomatoes are the exception. This is due to a botanical trait called adventitious rooting — the ability to form roots from stem tissue rather than just root tissue.

Any portion of the tomato stem that is buried in moist soil will form roots within 7–14 days. These are fully functional feeder roots, not just anchor roots. The result is a dramatically larger root system than a shallowly planted transplant would develop in the same time.

University of California Cooperative Extension research on transplant establishment found that deeply planted tomatoes showed 35–50% greater early-season biomass than shallow-planted controls in the same soil. Trench planting (best for leggy transplants)

Best for: Transplants that are tall and leggy (stem long relative to leaf coverage), or for gardeners who want maximum root development.

Trench planting buries a larger portion of the stem than hole planting and creates a wider, shallower root system rather than a deep one. Wide root systems are more efficient at accessing water in the top 12 inches of soil.

  1. Dig a trench 4–6 inches deep and as long as the plant stem you want to bury
  2. Remove all leaves from the section of stem that will be underground
  3. Lay the plant on its side in the trench with only the top 4–5 inches of stem and leaves above soil
  4. Cover the stem with soil, gently curving the exposed tip upward
  5. Water well
  6. Within 3–5 days, the tip will curve upward toward the sun on its own

Trench-planted tomatoes look awkward for the first week, then straighten and grow normally. The buried stem develops dense root growth across its entire buried length.

How deep to plant in containers

Container tomatoes need the same deep planting as in-ground plants. The stem-rooting process works identically in containers.

For containers:

  • Fill the container partially with potting mix
  • Place the transplant with the root ball resting on the partial fill
  • Add more potting mix around and over the stem, burying it up to the lowest healthy leaves
  • The final soil level should leave 2–4 leaf sets above the rim

Minimum container depth:

  • Determinate varieties (Roma, Bush Early Girl): 12–14 inches deep
  • Indeterminate varieties (most heirlooms, Cherry types): 18–20 inches deep

Soil temperature and planting time

Deep planting only works as intended when soil temperature is right. Tomato roots grow actively when soil temperature is 60–85°F. Below 55°F, root development stalls — deep planting provides no advantage until the soil warms up.

In Zones 3–5, soil at 6 inches deep often stays below 55°F until late May or even early June, even when air temperatures are warm. Planting too early at depth means the buried stem stays cold and root development is slow.

Check soil temperature with an inexpensive probe thermometer — air temperature is not a reliable guide. This is especially important in high-elevation gardens in Zones 5–7 where spring soil warming lags air warming by 2–3 weeks.

What to add to the planting hole

What to add: Compost (a cup or two) at the bottom of the hole or trench improves soil structure and provides moderate nutrition.

Epsom salt in the hole: Epsom salt (magnesium sulfate) is widely recommended by gardeners for planting holes, but university research shows consistent benefit only in soils that are already magnesium-deficient. Bone meal: A handful of bone meal in the hole provides slow-release phosphorus that supports early root development. Phosphorus is the nutrient most responsible for root growth. It’s a practical addition if you don’t have recent soil test data.

Calcium: Blossom end rot — a calcium-deficiency symptom — is common in tomatoes grown in inconsistently watered or acidic soils. Adding crushed eggshells or garden lime to the planting hole at transplant time is a preventive measure, though consistent watering does more than calcium amendments in most cases. What not to add: Do not add strong nitrogen fertilizers (synthetic or high-nitrogen organic) directly to the hole at planting. Nitrogen at high concentration near fresh roots can cause fertilizer burn. Balanced slow-release fertilizer at the soil surface is a safer approach.

Spacing when planting deep

Deep planting does not change horizontal spacing requirements. Tomatoes need adequate spacing for air circulation, light, and root spread regardless of planting depth.

After planting: first-week care

Water at planting. Water thoroughly immediately after transplanting — enough for water to drain 6–8 inches deep. This settles the soil around the buried stem and ensures no air pockets remain around the roots.

Mulch. Apply 2–3 inches of straw, wood chip, or shredded leaf mulch around the base. Mulch maintains soil temperature, retains moisture, and reduces soil splash that spreads disease. Keep mulch 2 inches away from the stem.

No fertilizer for the first 2 weeks. Newly transplanted tomatoes need time to establish roots before they can efficiently use fertilizers. Common mistakes

Planting too shallow. Leaving only the root ball underground and not burying stem tissue wastes the primary advantage of deep planting. The rule: bury up to the lowest healthy leaves.

Not removing leaves before burying. Leaves buried in soil rot quickly and can introduce fungal disease into the stem tissue. Always remove every leaf that will be underground before planting.

Planting in cold soil. Transplanting into soil below 55°F at depth means the buried stem sits in cold, wet soil without rooting — this creates conditions favorable to stem rot rather than root development. Wait for soil to warm.

Disturbing the root ball. When transplanting from a pot, disturbing the existing root ball can delay establishment. Place the root ball intact into the hole and minimize handling of the roots.

How to grow tomatoes from seed

If you’re starting tomatoes from seed rather than purchasing transplants, proper transplanting depth becomes relevant when moving seedlings to their final location. Seedlings started in late winter (8–10 weeks before last frost) should be:

  1. First transplanted to 4-inch pots at normal depth
  2. Hardened off over 7–10 days before going outdoors
