Fertilizer for Lilacs

Do lilacs need fertilizer?

Established lilacs in average garden soil rarely need fertilizer. The most common fertilizer mistake with lilacs is over-feeding with nitrogen — which produces dense, dark green foliage but prevents bloom. A lilac that won’t flower is usually getting too much nitrogen, not too little of anything else.

When and how to apply fertilizer

  1. Sunlight: does the lilac receive at least 6 hours of direct sun daily? Lilacs in shade or partial shade rarely bloom well regardless of nutrition.
