Why most tomato cages fail — and what to build instead

Standard wire tomato cages collapse under mature indeterminate plants. DIY options made from remesh, rebar, or the Florida weave method cost less and hold 10–20 lbs of fruit reliably through the season.

The 3-ring wire tomato cage sold at hardware stores is designed for determinate tomatoes — compact bush varieties that top out at 3–4 feet. Indeterminate varieties like Brandywine, Cherokee Purple, and most heirlooms grow 5–8 feet and produce fruit until frost. A 4-foot cage with thin wire bends sideways under a loaded Brandywine by late July.

Building your own support takes 30–60 minutes and costs $5–$30 per plant depending on method. It lasts years longer than store-bought.

Method 1: Florida weave (best for row plantings)

The Florida weave is the staking method used by small commercial tomato farms across the US Southeast. It scales from 2 plants to 200, requires minimal material, and handles any vine height.

Materials per 10-foot row:

  • 2 wooden stakes (6 feet tall, 1×1 or 1×2 inch) or rebar stakes
  • Ball of garden twine or tomato string

Setup:

  1. Drive stakes 12 inches into the ground — one at each end of the row, plus one every 4 feet in longer rows
  2. At 10 inches above soil, tie twine to the first stake and run it along one side of the plant stems to the far stake
  3. Loop around the far stake and return along the opposite side of the stems, looping around each plant’s stake
  4. Pull snug — twine sandwiches the plants between two runs, supporting them laterally without tying individual plants
  5. Repeat at 20 inches, 30 inches, and every 8–10 inches as the vines grow

  3. Set the cylinder over the plant and drive a rebar stake through the mesh into the ground on one side for stability

One 50-foot roll makes 10 cages — enough for a full tomato bed. The cages stack flat at end of season and last indefinitely with no rust treatment needed.

Diameter: 18 inches fits most indeterminate varieties. 24-inch diameter (cut 6-foot sections) gives more room for sprawling plants like Mortgage Lifter.

The 6×6 inch grid opening lets you reach in to harvest without bending wire, unlike smaller mesh products.

Method 3: A-frame trellis (best for raised beds)

An A-frame trellis spans a raised bed and lets tomato vines climb netting rather than being caged or staked individually.

Materials for a 4×8 foot raised bed:

  • 4 pieces of 2×2 lumber, 8 feet long
  • 2 pieces of 2×2 lumber, 4 feet long (crossbar)
  • 1 roll of garden netting (4×8 feet minimum, 6-inch mesh)
  • Exterior wood screws
  • Optional: bolt connectors at the peak

Construction:

  1. Build two identical triangular frames: two 8-foot uprights joined at the top with a bolt or screw joint, with a 4-foot crossbar set 18 inches from the bottom for stability
  2. Space the frames 4 feet apart at the bed’s long ends, leaning inward to form an A shape over the bed
  3. Attach netting across the top and down both sides — vines grow up the netting on each side
  4. Train tomato vines up the netting with soft plant ties as they grow

Height: Set to give 5–6 feet of climbing surface. The crossbar below keeps the structure rigid without guy wires.

Best for: 2–4 plants per side, indeterminate varieties trained vertically. Works particularly well for cherry tomatoes, which produce long vining stems.

Staking with rebar

Training plants on your trellis

A trellis only works if vines are trained to it. Tomatoes don’t cling like cucumbers — they need guidance.
