Can Spider Plants Live Outside

Spider plants grow outdoors year-round in USDA Zones 9–11. In cooler zones they thrive outside spring through fall. This guide covers care by region.

Spider plants (Chlorophytum comosum) are native to tropical and southern Africa and grow as outdoor perennials in USDA Zones 9–11 (Southern California, Gulf Coast, Florida, Hawaii). Can spider plants live outside?

Spider plants (Chlorophytum comosum) can live outside year-round as perennials in USDA Zones 9–11. In Zones 6–8, they thrive outdoors from late spring through early fall. In Zone 9 (Houston, Phoenix, Sacramento), spider plants can survive winter outdoors in most years. Hard freezes (25°F or below) will kill the foliage, but the fleshy root system often survives and pushes new growth in spring. If growing in-ground in Zone 9, mulch heavily before winter.

How to transition spider plants from indoors to outdoors

Moving spider plants from inside to outside requires gradual hardening to prevent leaf scorch.

Hardening schedule:

  1. Day 1–3: place outside in deep shade for 2–3 hours, then bring in
  2. Day 4–7: increase to 4–5 hours in the shade position
  3. Week 2: move to the intended outdoor spot (filtered light) for half the day
  4. Week 3: leave in the outdoor spot full-time

This 2–3 week process prevents the shock that occurs when indoor-adapted foliage is suddenly exposed to outdoor light intensity. Even a relatively shaded outdoor position has significantly higher UV levels than interior window light.

Outdoor planting options: container vs. in-ground

Container (most common in Zones 6–8)

Spider plants in containers can be moved inside and outside seasonally. This is the most practical approach for gardeners in Zones 4–8.

Container recommendations:

  • Use a pot with drainage holes — this cannot be optional for outdoor use; rain and irrigation cause overwatering without drainage
  • Choose a container 2 inches larger than the root ball — spider plants bloom and produce more spiderettes when slightly root-bound
  • Use a well-draining potting mix with perlite (25% perlite added to standard mix improves drainage)
  • Terracotta dries out faster than plastic — good for hot, humid climates; less ideal for dry climates where frequent watering is needed

In-ground (Zones 9–11)

In frost-free zones, spider plants grow vigorously in the ground as ground covers or border plants. They spread by spiderettes that root wherever they touch soil.

In-ground requirements:

  • Well-draining soil — amend clay soil with 2–3 inches of compost and coarse grit before planting
  • Plant in filtered shade or morning sun
  • Space plants 12–15 inches apart for ground cover use — they’ll fill in fully within one growing season

Outdoor spider plants need more water than indoor plants. Sun exposure, wind, and heat increase transpiration. In summer (Zone 7 and south), container spider plants may need water every 1–2 days.

Watering guidelines:

  • Check containers daily in temperatures above 85°F
  • Water when the top inch of soil is dry in moderate weather; when the surface is dry in heat
  • Never let containers sit in standing water — empty saucers after rain
  • In-ground plants need 1 inch of water per week during dry periods

Fertilizing outdoors:

  • Apply a balanced liquid fertilizer (10-10-10 or 20-20-20 at half label strength) every 4–6 weeks from June through August
  • Do not fertilize in spring before the plant has acclimated to outdoor conditions

Common outdoor pests:

  • Spider mites: fine webbing on undersides of leaves; more common in hot, dry conditions; increase humidity and wash leaves
  • Mealybugs: white, cottony clusters in leaf joints; remove by hand with a cotton swab dipped in rubbing alcohol
  • Slugs: ragged holes in leaves, usually at night; most common in cool, wet outdoor conditions; use iron phosphate bait

Disease:

  • Root rot: caused by waterlogged soil in containers without drainage — the most common outdoor problem; prevent with good drainage
  • Brown tips: most common outdoors from fluoride in tap water or salt accumulation in containers; water deeply to flush salts; use rainwater if possible

Toxicity note for outdoor use

Spider plants are mildly toxic to cats and dogs. The toxic compounds — chlorophytum saponins and oxalates — cause vomiting, diarrhea, and mild sedation if ingested.

Bringing spider plants back inside for winter

Bring spider plants inside before temperatures drop below 50°F consistently. In Zone 6–7, this typically means early October.

Before bringing inside:

  1. Inspect every leaf and the soil surface for pests — do not bring infested plants indoors
  2. If pests are present, treat outdoors with insecticidal soap 48 hours before moving inside and inspect again
  3. Pot in fresh potting mix if roots are circling the pot or soil looks degraded
  4. Cut back any damaged, scorched, or dead foliage

Transitioning back inside: The reverse of hardening — reduce light exposure over 2 weeks. Bring inside first to a bright window, then gradually move to the intended interior location.
