Strawberry types for US gardens
Strawberries are the most widely grown home fruit crop in the US, producing in USDA Zones 3–10 from spring-planted bare-root crowns or transplants. Three types differ primarily in when they produce fruit — and choosing the right type for your goals determines how much fruit you actually harvest.
June-bearing strawberries
Produce one large crop over 2–3 weeks in late spring to early summer (May–June in most US zones). Triggered by short days and cool temperatures in fall, they set fruit the following spring.
Benefits: Largest berries, best flavor, highest single-season yield. Ideal for jam, freezing, and bulk harvest.
Limitation: Short harvest window. You get a lot of fruit at once, then nothing.
Top US varieties by zone:
- Zones 3–5: ‘Honeoye’, ‘Jewel’, ‘Sparkle’

Day-neutral strawberries

Limitation: Smaller berries than June-bearing types; lower total yield.
Top US day-neutral varieties: ‘Albion’ (the best-flavored day-neutral; developed in California; widely available), ‘San Andreas’, ‘Seascape’, ‘Tristar’.
Everbearing strawberries
A loose term for varieties that produce two to three crops per season — one in spring, one in late summer, sometimes a third in fall. ‘Ozark Beauty’ and ‘Fort Laramie’ are common US everbearing types.
These are less productive than true day-neutral types but more widely available at US big-box garden centers.

Where to plant strawberries
Strawberries need:
- Full sun, 6–8 hours daily. Fewer than 6 hours significantly reduces yield and sugar content. North-facing or shaded beds produce poor strawberries regardless of other care.
- Slightly acidic soil, pH 5.5–6.5. Outside this range, nutrient uptake suffers. Test soil before planting — a basic pH test kit costs under $15 at US garden centers.
- Good drainage. Crown rot develops in waterlogged soil. Raised beds are ideal in clay soils.
- Rotation. Never plant strawberries where strawberries, tomatoes, peppers, potatoes, or eggplant grew in the previous 3 years. These crops share soil pathogens (Verticillium wilt, Phytophthora) that persist in soil.

Planting strawberries
Timing:
- Zones 3–7: Plant bare-root strawberries in early spring, 4–6 weeks before your last frost date. The soil should be workable but the last frost not yet past.
- Zones 8–10: Plant in fall (September–October) for a spring crop.
Planting method:
- Prepare soil: amend with 2–3 inches of compost. Test and adjust pH if needed.
- Dig planting holes so the crown (where roots meet stem) sits exactly at soil level — not buried, not exposed.
- Spread roots downward. Do not let roots circle or bunch.
- Space plants 18–24 inches apart in rows 3–4 feet apart (matted row system), or 12 inches apart in a hill system.
- Water in gently but thoroughly.
- Mulch between rows with straw to suppress weeds and keep berries clean.
Crown placement is critical. Too deep (crown buried) causes crown rot. Too shallow (crown exposed above soil) causes drying and plant death. The crown should sit exactly at soil surface.

Matted row is the standard system for US June-bearing strawberry production. It’s low-maintenance and self-filling, but requires annual renovation to prevent overcrowding.
Hill system works best for day-neutral types, which produce better when not competing with runner energy. Removing all runners directs all plant energy into fruit.
The first-year blossom removal rule
Remove all flowers from June-bearing strawberries in their planting year. This step feels counterintuitive but is critical: fruiting in year one exhausts new plants, produces small berries, and reduces the number of runners the plant sets for the following year’s bed.
Day-neutral plants can be allowed to fruit in their first year but benefit from pinching blooms for the first 4–6 weeks after planting to establish roots.
Everbearing types: Remove spring blossoms; allow the summer and fall crops to develop.
Watering strawberries
Strawberries need 1–1.5 inches of water per week during the growing season. During fruit development (berry swelling to harvest), consistent moisture is essential — drought stress during this period produces small, seedy fruit.
Drip irrigation is ideal for strawberries. It delivers water directly to roots, keeps leaves dry (reducing fungal disease), and maintains consistent moisture without wetting berries.
Overhead irrigation increases risk of botrytis gray mold on berries during wet, humid weather. If using overhead irrigation, water in the morning so leaves dry by afternoon.
In clay soils: Water less often but more deeply. Allow the top 1–2 inches to dry between waterings.
Container strawberries: Check daily in summer. Containers in full sun may need watering twice daily in heat above 90°F.
Fertilizing strawberries
At planting: Work 1/2 pound of 10-10-10 per 25 square feet into the top 6 inches of soil before planting.
Mid-summer, year 1: Apply 1/4 pound of 10-10-10 per 25 square feet in July to support runner development.
At renovation (June-bearing, after harvest): Apply 1/2 pound of 10-10-10 per 25 square feet and water in.
Following years, spring: Apply 1/2 pound of balanced fertilizer per 25 square feet as new growth begins.
Avoid high-nitrogen fertilizers in spring — they push leaf growth at the expense of flowers. After harvest, nitrogen is appropriate to support runner and new plant development.
Annual renovation for June-bearing beds
June-bearing strawberry beds need renovation immediately after the last harvest, typically in July in most US zones.
Steps:
- Mow or cut leaves to 3–4 inches above the crowns. Do not mow into the crowns.
- Rototill or hand-weed the bed to 12 inches wide, removing excess plants.
- Thin remaining plants to 4–6 inches apart.
- Remove any diseased or weak plants.
- Apply 1/2 pound of 10-10-10 per 25 square feet and water in.
- Keep bed weeded through August; let runners re-establish.
Renovation restores productivity by starting fresh with young, vigorous plants while maintaining established root structure. Skipping renovation leads to overcrowded beds, smaller berries, and declining yields within 2–3 years.

Verticillium wilt is the most destructive disease for US home strawberry beds. Infected soil can’t grow strawberries, tomatoes, peppers, or potatoes for 3–4+ years. There is no fungicide fix. The only management is prevention: plant certified disease-free plants, rotate beds, and avoid problem sites.
Strawberries in raised beds and containers
Raised beds solve most strawberry soil problems: drainage, pH adjustment, rotation, and accessibility. A 4×8 foot raised bed holds 16–20 strawberry plants and produces 20–40+ quarts of berries annually at peak (years 2–3).
Container setup:
- Use 5-gallon or larger containers with drainage holes
- Fill with potting mix lightened with 20% perlite
- Plant 1 plant per 5-gallon container; 3 plants per 15-gallon planter
- Water daily in summer; fertilize weekly with balanced liquid fertilizer
Hanging baskets work for day-neutral and everbearing types. Plant 3 plants per 12-inch basket. Strawberry towers and vertical planters are popular but require very consistent watering — they dry out rapidly in summer heat.

Overwintering strawberries in cold zones
In Zones 3–5, protect strawberry crowns from freeze damage after hard frost (below 25°F) arrives:
- After the ground freezes (typically November–December), apply 3–4 inches of clean straw over the entire bed.
- Straw mulch, not wood chips — straw stays loose and insulates without matting.
- Remove straw in early spring when new growth begins, typically when temperatures reliably stay above 20°F at night.
Mulching before the ground freezes traps moisture and can cause crown rot. Wait until after the first hard freeze.
In Zones 6–7, winter mulching is optional but protects against freeze-thaw cycles that heave plants out of the ground. If plants are heaving, mulch after the first freeze.
