Fertilizing eggplant

Container eggplant needs more frequent fertilization — every 2 weeks — because nutrients leach from pots faster than in-ground beds.

Staking and caging eggplant

Eggplant branches break under the weight of multiple fruits. Each branch can carry 2–4 eggplants at once, and the stem connection points crack if unsupported.

  • Install a 36-inch tomato cage at transplanting or within the first 2 weeks.

  • Fruit yields slightly to firm finger pressure but springs back — like ripe avocado firmness.
  • Cut stem has no browning or drying.

Harvest frequency: Check plants every 2–3 days in peak season. Leaving overripe fruit on the plant signals the plant to reduce new flower production.
